Vastu Shastra: A Guide to Harmonizing Architecture and Design
By
SSID
Vastu Shastra means architectural principles. The great Indian sages devoted their time to studying the influence of negative geographic impact. Vastu is not just a mystic text; it is a phenomenon observed and compiled by some of the great ancient sages (rishis). Vastu has been a boon for humanity ever since it was invented. The very purpose of Vastu is to impart peace and prosperity.
1. How does Vastu actually work?
Vastu Shastra is based on the concept of scientifically combining the five basic elements – earth, water, fire, air and sky – to create a pleasant setting. Our great rishis (scientists) solved all the secrets of the universe and their special characteristics and influences, such as magnetic field and gravitational impact. They studied the 9 planets closely, did research on the sun, ultraviolet rays, and infrared rays. They evolved a scientific method and system and compiled it into a principle called Vastu Shastra. Vastu is the science which focuses on studying and optimizing the energy for good only. As energy can neither be created nor destroyed, Vastu is not about creating or destroying energy; it’s all about how you can utilize it and how we can transform the negativity of that energy into something positive. It encompasses guidelines related to the layout, spatial arrangement, and directional alignment of buildings to promote well-being, prosperity, and peace.
2. How to attain peace in your home with the help of Vastu?
Peace is the essence of happiness, prosperity, and luck, and it is the most important thing nowadays. One can enjoy peace by properly implementing Vastu principles and seeking the guidance of Vastu experts. Most people are suffering from problems, and almost all of them are linked to Vastu mistakes. Here, Vastu mistakes mean wrong construction, such as building a toilet in the ISHAN KON (northeast) direction, which can lead to health and financial issues. There are many more examples. Hence, the only way to achieve long-lasting happiness is by implementing Vastu Shastra.
3. Which is the best facing house as per Vastu?
The main entrance of your home is the most important thing, as it is like a portal from which anyone can enter or exit. Inviting abundance to your home secret is by placing the entrance door in the right direction. East-faced house is the most auspicious direction as per Vastu because the sun rises from the east, representing new beginnings and bringing positivity. North-east-faced houses are considered lucky because this direction is believed to be associated with wealth and abundance. Placing a Ganesha idol or image on the main entrance door is auspicious as it blocks negativity and enhances positive energy.
4. Is constructing a 3-storey building good or bad?
As long as Vastu principles are used in the construction of the building, it is not a problem. One can have a 3, 4, or 7-storey building, and it has nothing to do with Vastu.
5. The key to a healthy living
Air is the most important thing for survival in Vastu. Vayu (air) is considered as “jivan data” because it gives life to everyone and everything. Constructing a closed house where sunlight and air are minimal is considered a bad omen. Some research has stated that closed houses with minimal air presence cause mental fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Here, closed construction means very little space for windows, no room for a balcony, and poor ventilation. A healthy body lives in a healthy mind. It is very important to ensure proper ventilation and sunlight in the house.
6. Staircase as per Vastu – the gateway to happiness
In general, a staircase constructed in the southwest direction is the best. It is important to avoid direct sunlight on the staircase as it can heat them up, which is not good for the house and its residents. South, west, and northwest are also good directions as per Vastu.
7. Importance of ISHAN KON (northeast)
Every direction has its importance in Vastu, and if you work according to that direction, you get good results. There are eight directions according to Vastu, and one of them is Ishan kon (northeast direction). This is the most auspicious direction as it represents something new and aligns your thoughts and energy with positivity. This direction is the best for a temple, and building toilets and bathrooms in this direction is forbidden as per Vastu.
